On this six song EP, both Hem (a Brooklyn based 8-piece) and Autumn Defense (multi-instrumentalists Pat Sansone and John Stirratt of Wilco), sprinkle their craft with an array of instruments (strings, acoustic guitars, pedal steel, mandolin, and organ) that blossoms into a gorgeous and lush yet delicate sound. The perfect soundtrack for remembering the summer while ushering in the fall.

I bought this CD for the Hem tracks, particularly St. Charlene, which is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. It gives me chills every time I listen to it. Half Acre and Pacific Street are also both quite good. I'd never heard of Autumn Defense before finding this CD; their tracks are OK but the Hem songs are the stars of the disc.
This is a mini lp by two bands. Hem and Autumn Defense are the two bands. St. Charlene is my favorite track on this. It is by HEM ,the band I bought the CD for. The songs by Autumn Defense were a surprise. Their singer is a male, and their songs are alternately placed next to the Hem songs to provide contrast. Had I not liked Autumn Defense, this would be a pain to listen to .I especially like the vibraphone on the Autumn Defense songs. Of course, Sally Ellyson's vocals are the drawing card for me. It soothes the soul.
I love the soft sound of the songs. Some times I use it for background music at work, but often I get caught up in the beauty of the lyrics and have to switch back to classical.

I've not received this item as of yet, it's on the way though. While listening to Pandora, "St Charlene" was playing - and I was hooked. I was looking for it on YouTube to see if there was a video on it; that would have been special indeed! I was also able to hear some others songs from Hem, and I'm very excited about finding new music for my collection.
I also bought this for Hem, but found myself singing The Autumn Defense's melancholy "Bluebirds Fall" all hours of the day for weeks. While all the songs are good, this is the one that really stands out for me, its melody and sound just mesmerizing. It has that laid-back early 70s L.A. country-rock sound with late 60s Beach Boys; even a bit of Nicks/Buckingham era Mac. With all that said, I often think of The High Llamas - if they were more mellow and warmer. As far as I know some of these tracks aren't available anywhere else, so suggest picking this one up!
