The Anarchist Cookbook Paperback – January 1, 2002

4.4 out of 5 stars 4,450 ratings

From the Author I have recently been made aware of several websites that focus on The Anarchist Cookbook. As the author of the original publication some 30 plus years ago, it is appropriate for me to comment. The Anarchist Cookbook was written during 1968 and part of 1969 soon after I graduated from high school. At the time, I was 19 years old and the Vietnam War and the so-called "counter culture movement" were at their height. I was involved in the anti-war movement and attended numerous peace rallies and demonstrations. The book, in many respects, was a misguided product of my adolescent anger at the prospect of being drafted and sent to Vietnam to fight in a war that I did not believe in. I conducted the research for the manuscript on my own, primarily at the New York City Public Library. Most of the contents were gleaned from Military and Special Forces Manuals. I was not member of any radical group of either a left or right wing persuasion. I submitted the manuscript directly to a number of publishers without the help or advice of an agent. Ultimately, it was accepted by Lyle Stuart Inc. and was published verbatim - without editing - in early 1970. Contrary to what is the normal custom, the copyright for the book was taken out in the name of the publisher rather than the author. I did not appreciate the significance of this at the time and would only come to understand it some years later when I requested that the book be taken out of print. The central idea to the book was that violence is an acceptable means to bring about political change. I no longer agree with this. Apparently in recent years, The Anarchist Cookbook has seen a number of 'copy cat' type publications, some with remarkably similar titles (Anarchist Cookbook II, III etc). I am not familiar with these publications and cannot comment upon them. I can say that the original Anarchist Cookbook has not been revised or updated in any way by me since it was first published.

I'm not quite sure how this book can be safely ...
I'm not quite sure how this book can be safely distributed. I am %100 against censorship, but the material in this book leaves one in such a fk'd state of mind, I don't know what to really say or write... Responsibility. Overrated or underrated ? This is something YOU MUST DECIDE FOR YOURSELF...

I bought this because I thought I would be funny. I take it as satire and also, just something silly to add to my ecclectic library of books I’ll never read, but will have my grandkids thinking grandma was nuts! LoL … please don’t take anything in this book seriously… it’s obviously just a conversation piece.

Ive always wanted a copy, Somewhat of a fascination. I cannot speak for the Original, it was written well before i was born and it seems original copies are very hard to come by and quite expensive. I have not read through entire book, but i skimmed through it checked out some of the more delicate subject matter... If your familar with the context of the writing you know what i mean. My three points thus far 1) There dose not seem to be any redacted material, in todays age i was worried about that and it seems intact although i could be mistaken ( see the Part above about the original). 2) The contents are intriguing, the forward is in depth and gives insight into my Parents and even Grandparents time in America, it should make for a good read 3) My copy at least is printed well, yes the margins are big, and the book its self while not "thick" is rather large at well over 8.5x11 for the hard cover edition. In closing not a bad purchase, however i would state this book covers a very serious subject matter, i would hope it is respected. And, while i beleive we should have acsess to this information, it is a bit, well scary to think of it the wrong hands, be careful, respect the subject matter. Hope you enjoy.

Classic book from 1971. Author changed his opinion about being an anarchist yrs later after writing this book. I feel it should be a part on the classics in ones personal library.

I love to collect books that are or were once considered taboo… book came exactly as described. The book itself contains a lot of outdated info and a lot of info that could be dangerous in the wrong hands, but it makes a cool addition to the book shelf!
