Editorial Reviews

Greg Edmonson Firefly [Original Television Soundtrack] Varese Sarabande - For a show that lasted only one season, it has outlived many that have gone on to future seasons. Joss Whedon (The Avengers, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.) created one of the most loved science fiction Television shows about a ship called Serenity that travels the galaxies. Adding to all the drama and action is composer Greg Edmonson's iconic score.

I Would Not Have Been Firefly Without The Edmonson Touch To Set The Scene And Mood

I Would Not Have Been Firefly Without The Edmonson Touch To Set The Scene And Mood
I have the series DVD set, I have the movie. Now I have the soundtrack. Excellent! It's good even by itself and Firefly would not have been what it was without this very special music. More than most series Greg Edmonson has made the music a critical element of the series. As the firefly Serenity is a character is the show, so it is with Greg's music. The funeral music almost brings me to tears by itself. Keep flying Brown Coats! Edmunson had made your sound track.

Way ahead of it's time, this show's influence can be seen in so many other works since. Just 14 episodes that laid the cinematography and score groundwork that would build BSG into a great show later. This music captures the flavor of the varied tapestry of the settings, the strong themes enhanced by a wide array of instruments. Try putting the tracks in a different order to more closely follow the episodes and convey the drama, humor, and emotions of each set. I have mine this way:
    [Serenity]
    01 Firefly - Main Title
    02 Whitefall / Book
    03 Reavers Chase Serenity

    [Train Job]
    04 Big Bar Fight
    05 Saved / Isn't Home? / Reavers
    06 Inara's Suite
    [Bushwhacked]
    07 Leaving / Caper / Spaceball

    [Shindig]
08 Cows / New Dress / My Crew

    [Safe]
    09 River's Dance
    10 Inside The Tam House
    11 River Understands Simon

    [Our Mrs. Reynolds]
    12 River's Perception / Saffron

    [Jaynestown]
    13 In My Bunk / Jayne's Statue / Boom
    14 Book's Hair / Ready For Battle
15 Boarding The Serenity / Derelict

    [Out of Gas]
16 Out Of Gas / Empty Derelict

    [Ariel]
    17 River's Afraid / Niska / Torture

    [War Stories]
18 Mal Fights Niska / Back Home

    [Out of Gas/Trash]
19 Dying Ship / Naked Mal

    [The Message]
    20 The Funeral

    [Heart of Gold]
    21 Heart of Gold Montage
    22 Burgess Kills / Captain & Ship

    [Objects in Space]
    23 Early Takes Serenity
    24 River Tricks Early
    25 Tears / River's Eyes
    >>

"River's Perception" and "The Funeral" are rich examples that capture what was going on. The loss of this show on television is one of the saddest turns in entertainment. Too big for TV.

For those of us who are "Firefly" fans and tried to be happy with the music from the movie inspired by the series, "Serenity," the long wait is over for the music that originally moved you and helped make "Firefly" the magical, immersion experience that it is.

I'm not knocking David Newman too much. The "Serenity" soundtrack had its moments (the title track "Serenity" and "Love" come to mind). But Texan composer-guitarist Greg Edmonson wrote the music that Nate Fillion ("Capt. Mal Reynolds") observed moved *him* deeply as *he'd* watch the episodes. This entire work is enjoyable, entertaining, and exhilarating. And the composer loved the show, writing some of his best music for episodes that - as far as he knew - might never air.

I'm convinced that this is a fan-driven soundtrack release. I've been waiting for my copy since I heard it would be available. Yet the best part of this soundtrack is that there's no pandering to the people; you just get the music from the show that you love. Here's what Greg himself had to say about working for the music of "Firefly":

"It wasn't just the cast, or the writing, acting or directing. It was not any one element. It was all the elements together. It was such clever show about deep, interesting things. In my opinion, it was too good for television."

Edmonson's masterful blending of Western and Eastern, classical and country avoids both the futuristic and archaic and leaves you in the "here and now" with your friends and foes in the world of "Firefly." I especially enjoyed the Theme, River's Dance, Funeral, and all the parts of all the songs with Edmonson's great Western guitar.

Yeah, Greg. It probably was "too good for television." I'll just have it for myself and share it as something precious with my intelligent, tasteful friends.

While Browncoats are sure to love this soundtrack, which is especially terrific for a TV show, even non-fans of "Firefly" should appreciate the beauty of certain tracks.
Probably the greatest shortcoming of the CDis that many of the songs are too short, but this is because the songs were as brief as their accompanying scenes required.
The "Main Title" is probably the best known, and loved, song. I do wish a longer version of this song, the only one with lyrics on the soundtrack, was available.
My favorite song is track six, "The Funeral." This is the music which played during the final scene ever filmed for the show, the funeral scene at the close of "The Message." The cast had already been informed that the show had been cancelled. The final shot of Nathan Fillion's "Malcolm Reynolds," standing silently stoic in the falling snow, always comes to my mind as I listen to the melancholy ending of "The Funeral."
Other songs I particularly like are "Inara's Suite" (track 14) and "River's Dance" (track 23).
The only song from the TV show that is not all the CD is the "A Man Called Jayne" about "Jayne Cobb," Adam Baldwin's delightful character.
Great soundtrack to a great show, cancelled way, way too soon. "You can't take the sky from me......"

A must have for all fans of the Firefly series, the haunting/beautiful music used throughout the short lived series really brought it to life.

I can't think of any real fault, if I was being picky, the cover looks a little poor, almost like it was a second generation copy from a copy, but that doesn't detract from the quality of the CD.

Glasklar aufgenommen, sehr

federleichte Melancholie immer wieder.
