Product Description
One of the most critically acclaimed shows in TV history, Homicide: Life on the Street reinvigorated a tired genre by focusing on the grueling work of solving murders instead of an endless succession of bloody crimes and car chases. Inspired by David Simon's Edgar Award-winning account of Baltimore homicide detectives and brought to television by writer Paul Attanasio (Gideon's Crossing) and director Barry Levinson (Analyze This, The Perfect Storm, Oz), Homicide boasted a powerhouse ensemble cast featuring Ned Beatty (Network, Deliverance), Yaphet Kotto (Alien, Midnight Run), Richard Belzer (Law & Order: SVU), and breakout star Andre Braugher (Frequency, Gideon's Crossing). Now this Emmy and Peabody Award winner debuts on DVD with this collector's set featuring all 13 episodes from the first two seasons of Homicide: Life on the Street.
Amazon.com
Homicide: Life on the Street was always ahead of its time. As this collection of the first two seasons proves--it still is. Crime dramas that have thrived on cable, like The Sopranos, have benefited from the ground Homicide broke--and inherited many of the talents (like Edie Falco) that made it great. To NBC's credit, particularly then-president and fan Warren Littlefield, it supported the show for seven years, despite several cast changes and lukewarm ratings. Fortunately, critics were enthusiastic from the start and fans were loyal. Awards would roll in, too, culminating in a richly deserved Emmy for Andre Braugher (Frank Pembleton).
Homicide was based on the book by David Simon and created by Paul Attanasio (Quiz Show), Tom Fontana (Oz), and Barry Levinson (Diner). It was filmed in Levinson's beloved Charm City and he directed several episodes, including "Gone for Goode," which introduced the case of Adena Watson (and won another Emmy). It would haunt Tim Bayliss (the underrated Kyle Secor) for the rest of the series. The authentic Maryland locations, unusual cases (many based on real-life incidents), groundbreaking camera work, edgy--often humorous--dialogue, and seemingly improvised acting set Homicide apart from everything on TV. Then there were the directors, like Nick Gomez ("Son of a Gun") and Alan Taylor ("A Dog and Pony Show"), and guest stars, like Gwen Verdon ("A Ghost of a Chance") and Robin Williams ("Bop Gun"). Could this really be network TV? Most times, it didn't feel like it. These 13 episodes present the main characters: Lieutenant Al "Gee" Giardello (Yaphet Kotto), Kay Howard (Melissa Leo), Meldrick Lewis (Clark Johnson), and John Munch (Richard Melzer), whose character would segue to Law & Order: SVU. Ned Beatty, Daniel Baldwin, and Jon Polito also make vivid impressions, but would not remain for the long haul. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2004I don't think I need to tell Jem fans why they should get this so this is for those of you that don't know what Jem is about. Here's a synopsis from the dvd cover: After her father passes away, Jerrica Benton inherits half of his company, Starlight Music. The other half has been given to the ruthless Eric Raymond. Raymond plans to exploit Starlight to promote a new band called the Misfits. Jerrica doesn't believe that this was her father's plan, but she is powerless to do anything about it. That is until a remarkable computer companion named Synergy enters her life (thanks also to her father). With a huge supply of instruments left by her father and using Synergy's impressive holographic powers, Jerrica, her younger sister Kimber, and their friends are transformed into the rock band, "Jem and the Holograms." Now, as the lead singer, Jem, Jerrica sets out to make the Holograms dreams a reality, and at the same time keep a group of young girls, a boyfriend Rio, and the record company happy. --
This show was truly underrated. Thankfully a bunch of fans like myself kept an interest enough to get these classic cartoons out on dvd! I enjoyed this as a kid and I still love watching it today as an adult! Introduce your kids to this show because unlike many cartoons today, there aren't many that actually are entertaining with action and drama but also promote strong moral values. Throughout the series there are quality episodes that talk about sensitive topics like runaways, stealing, drugs, suicide, etc...but its also done in a manner that a child can understand and theres ALWAYS an emphasis on talking with a loved one if you ever have a problem. And when the show isn't about a moral issue, there's the popular fun feud to enjoy between Jem and their jealous rivals, The Misfits! The Misfits are constantly causing trouble for Jem and The Holograms and as a result both groups often get themselves in quite a bit of trouble as they travel around the world. One other clever little sub-plot is the love triangle Jerrica formed between herself, Rio, and Jem! Because she's hiding her identity as Jem to Rio, she's only managed to become jealous of herself!
There's also a few short original pop song segments thrown in that sound better than alot of 80s songs! Its just too bad they are only about a minute in length. To give you an example of what a great role model Jem can be to both boys and girls, here's a couple lines from the Jem and the Holograms song "How You Play The Game": 'it's how you play the game...how you play the game, that's where it begins, how you play the game (how you play the game), How are you're feeling at the finish, when its all over, that's what really matters, not who wins.' See! Sure, a little cheesy, but the kids could use positive messages like that. Anyways, buy this set! you can also check out the episode guide at [...]
*** Update Oct.2005 - I disagree about it not being worth 100 bucks! It really depends on what the cartoon is worth to you but as a Jem fan, I would gladly pay 100 bucks to obtain this collection. There's also nothing wrong with those sellers getting 4 times what they paid for it. We all had the chance to buy an extra copy when they were at an affordable cost. Unfortunately it went out of print and therefore is now a collector's item. The value goes up.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2004Thank you Rhino. For soooo many years, Jem fans have had nothing but two measly "selected episodes" tapes and the doll collector's market. Despite the wave of 80's nostalgia, typically, this girl-power pioneer has not seen the resurgence other (and dare I say less significant, culturally, at least) 80's cartoons have enjoyed, like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, for example. You can't see Jem anywhere on the air, and, if you're like me, you've been looking fearfully at those old video tapes and that cheap VCR wondering how long before a world without Jem.
Enter Rhino. Jem on DVD. Seems too good to be true! Not "selected episodes," not somebody's idea of how to make a few bucks until a better opportunity comes along, no, the entirety of seasons 1 & 2, in order. AND the "play songs" feature, so that, FINALLY, you can rock with the Holograms and the Misfits at will, without having to rewind, fast forward, or sing off-key from memory!
This would've been enough for Jem-starved me, but I actually think they did a fine job on the packaging. First of all, although they didn't do what in my mind would've been the perfect thing but I can see the difficulties, which is package it with those great 80's commercials (I miss the My Little Pony interludes, frankly), they did keep the animated commercial intros--perfect. The box also opens three ways to reveal some gorgeous stills, like that ol' standard, the Rio kiss. Underneath each DVD is a friendly Hologram's face, smiling back at you in full makeup and big hair. Beyond my expectations.
All that petitioning the Jem webring did might not have gotten it back on the air, but here's to hoping the fans rally enough so that Rhino sees it fit to put out the next seasons. There's so much that's missing, really the height of the show: Raya, Jetta, The Stingers, Hollywood Jem. Can't wait.
If you at all consider yourself to be a Jem fan, don't hesitate. This is an express to youth, and fun, and, at this point, feminist high culture. I don't have a daughter, but it gives me some consolation to think that, if I ever do, I may now be able to share such an important part of my past with her. As for now I'll be content to force my husband to watch with me. He's more of a Misfits fan, but what the heck. Apparently Pizzazz has some sort of male cult following. Whatever!
It seems to me that there is no such thing as a lukewarm Jem fan--those who "got" it, loved it. So much of me is wrapped up in this strangely adult and soap-operaish cartoon: my sense of style, my sexuality, my confidence, my interpersonal skills. No kidding! Jem/Jerrica was/is such a great role model, and so unique from the girl perspective. Similar to Wonder Woman in employing the hidden identity/super identity trope for a woman, it is nevertheless different because of its realism (true, there's a superholographic computer, but that's not the same as superstrength or the ability to jump tall buildings--Synergy is a potentially scientifically reasonable device; in other words, Jem is sci-fi, Wonder Woman fantasy). It is also a great document for the times, reflecting so much of what was hip then: MTV, videos, the corporate-world obsession.
The good old days. Outrageous.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still great
Homicide: Life on the street was way ahead of its time. It still resonates. This TV show was the precursor to "The Wire", arguably the best show on TV.

Meine Güte, was wird hier gejammert. Life on the Street, Staffel 1 [4 DVDs] vorher anzusehen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Seasons
Greatest seasons (along with season 3) of perhaps the best police procedural ever on television. The first three seasons are definitely the strongest, as they afterward lost some of their strongest cast members and ran out of source material.

4.0 out of 5 stars Staffel Top. Folge 1 technisch Schrott.

1.0 out of 5 stars Vorsicht defekte DVD
