In this first novel of the Incarnations of Immortality, Piers Anthony combines a gripping story of romance and conflicting loyalties with a deeply moving examination of the meaning of life and death. This is a novel that will long linger in the reader's mind.

Shooting Death was a mistake, as Zane soon discovered. For the man who killed the Incarnation of Death was immediately forced to assume the vacant position! Thereafter, he must speed over the world, riding his pale horse, and ending the lives of others.

Zane was forced to accept his unwelcome task, despite the rules that seemed woefully unfair. But then he found himself being drawn into an evil plot of Satan. Already the prince of Evil was forging a trap in which Zane must act to destroy Luna, the woman he loved.

He could see only one possible way to defeat the Father of Lies. It was unthinkable--but he had no other solution!

From the Back Cover

When Zane shot Death, he learned, too late, that he would have to assume his place, speeding over the world riding his pale horse, and ending the lives of others. Sooner than he would have thought possible, Zane found himself being drawn to Satan's plot. Already the Prince of Evil was forging a trap in which Zane must act to destroy Luna, the woman he loved...unless he could discover the only way out....
The first novel of the INCARNATIONS OF IMMORATLITY series.

About the Author

Piers Anthony, sometimes called Pier Xanthony, is the pseudonym of a Mundane character who was born in England in 1934, came to America in 1940, was naturalized in 1958, and moved to Xanth in 1977. His first story was published in 1963, and his first novel, Chthon, in 1967. His first Xanth novel, A Spell for Chameleon, won the August Derleth Fantasy Award as the best novel for 1977, and his fantasy novels began placing on the New York Times bestseller list with Ogre, Ogre. He shifted from writing in pencil to writing on the computer, and Golem in the Gears was his first novel created on the machine; naturally, the computer found its way into Xanth.

    アメリカのペーパーバックの中古なので期待していなかったが、焼け、シミなどほとんどなく、本の背中も割れていなかった。保存状態極めて良好でした。

5.0 out of 5 stars one of my favourite Piers Anthony series'

This series and the "Adept" series are my favs from this author. I have read and reread them through my life, which pretty much follows the decades that they author has been producing books. I started as a teen in the 80s. Besides the entertaining and ease of reading, I felt it had a positive influence on my life since teen years and has helped guide my value system, at least insofar as it has made me think about things in life critically from a fun platform. Alas, I have tried to get my son into this author but he is more into Anime.

This is just the first book in a series by Piers Anthony who is well known for his Xanth books. Personally I prefer his series and is more suited for adult fantasy lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars I saw an ad for burial plots, and thought to myself this is the last thing I need.

Puns, death, titillation... it’s all here. It’s been over 30 years since I last read this book. I thought I’d re-read it and it holds up after all these years. I’d forgotten how insightful Anthony could be concerning life and death, time and fate, good and evil. The Kindle version isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I saw few if any spelling or punctuation errors. I’ve decided to re-read the other novels in the series as well.
