Zero 7's ability to conjure beautiful lullabies with all the romance of 1960s French pop (as found on their debut LP, Simple Things) would have made them the toast of soundtrack composers and chill-out connoisseurs the world over. Unfortunately, two Frenchmen beat Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker to the title of "masters of comedown cool," leaving the London duo to be forever called "the British Air." And this is fair; the similarities between Zero 7's lush cinematic soundscapes and those of Air's Moon Safari and the Virgin Suicides score are so strong as to sound almost intentional. Nonetheless, their debut is a truly gorgeous album. It has all the tried and tested atmospheric tricks--bleeps and whooshes layered over plodding Fender Rhodes chords, swathes of strings and tender trumpet parps--but it's Binns and Hardaker's languid grooves and the soft melancholy of their melodies that make dream-state instrumentals "Give It Away" and "Polaris" utterly enchanting. The real power of Simple Things, however, is in its songs. As beautiful as the ambient strains are, when laid beneath the seductive vocals of Australian diva Sia on the ethereal "Destiny" or the heart-breaking "Distractions," their potency becomes apparent. --Dan Gennoe

Review

While Zero 7 may have garnered accolades with the UK audience and music press by touching their magic musical wands to Radiohead, Terry Callier and Lenny Kravitz tracks - all variables factoring into a coveted Mercury Prize nomination and other awards for Simple Things - they've been patiently waiting for Americans to chill out to debut their album stateside. And in a time of rattled nerves, this might be the right moment.

Zero 7 (comprised of longtime North Londoner friends Sam Hardaker and Henry Binns) became the talk of the town with their sexy, contemplative "Distractions" last year. It gave those who relish the astral, dreamy, blanketing sounds of bands such as Air a glimpse into their virtuosic production talents, which are reflected in the cinematic nature of each song. What results is a tangible familiarity, though this could also be due to the fact that Quincy Jones, Charles Stepney and Ray Charles are the duo's reference points.

Simple Things leaves no visible seams, whether it be the jump from the instrumental, jangly "Give It Away" to the quick-footed Rhodes guitar responding to Mozez's vocals on the title track. Zero 7's best asset is Sia Furler, who takes memorable songs ("Destiny," "Distraction") to their elaborate potentials with a voice that melts metal. A major gripe can be that this genteel album is just too eager to please all types of listeners, but Simple Things' key is fixing you into such a warm and comforting place that you can't muster enough anger to protest.

The only word that I think really captures the essence of this CD is "Beautiful". Very rarely does one come across a CD with tracks so listenable, so delectable, so pleasing, that it simply occupies and becomes a part of the space that is you car CD player, your CD changer at home, your portable CD player, you computer CD-ROM.
From beginning to end, listeners will be amazed by the richness of the vocals and instrumentals on this CD. Each song is finely crafted, well performed and well produced by Zero 7. The vocals are unique and memorable, the lyrics are beautiful and very sexy, the instrumentals will bring you into a whole other stratosphere. Listen to it while you commute, listen to it after dinner, listen to it with a good book, it somehow seems perfect for any situation and will never fail to stir something inside of you.
The only other CD that I own that remotely comes close to this CD is "Vertigo" by Groove Armada, but this CD is somehow more mature, more emotional, just more.
Amazon recommends Nuspirit Helsinki and Beautiful Tomorrow by Blue Six. Yes, those CD's are also good, but not nearly as, how can one say this, emotional and provacative as Simple Things. After listening to this CD a few times, albums Nuspirit Helsinki and Beautiful Tomorrow by Blue Six seem somewhat boring, monotonous, and plain-jane. From the sexy vocals to the well written lyrics to the nicely orchastrated instrumentals, this CD is a work of art. A must own.

It is hard for me to describe how inspiring this CD is. I really feel that everyone should have this in their record collection because it is such beautiful music. Destiny is one of the most heartfelt and inspiring songs I have ever heard. Definitely listen to that one first and you will know if you like Zero 7. That is probably one of 10 songs I've heard in my life that I was completely blown away by and couldn't stop thinking about. I can actually remember exactly where I was when I first heard it, how rare is that!

And the rest of the CD is perfect. The songs are varied and complex enough that I never get tired of it, even after hundreds of listens. Because of this it works as well on headphones or in the background. Great music for going to the beach or relaxing. I'm still searching for a CD this good and I haven't found it. Well, their second one is the only one that comes close. The vocalists they have are just so incredibly soulful and the production is beyond top notch. The album came out 4 years ago and I think it shows how talented they are in that no one has come close to touching it (in the genre). I've heard some good singles from other groups, but to make an album so complete, the very top of the genre, it is impressive. Long live Zero 7, one of my favorite groups ever, may they make as many records as possible.

OMG what an album! I stumbled onto this group thank to Pandora, who kept playing them in my "trip hop" station. Broke down and got this album, and it delivers well. I don't know that I would call them trip hop, since this has very light electronic elements that are not really the primary sound of any song. It's the strong vocals that hooked me in from the multiple singers they brought in for the album. Sia Furler, Sophie Barker, and Mozez contribute to all the memorable songs on this album. It has more of a jazzy vibe mixed with RnB, and light electronic elements. Check out these songs...

    1. Destiny - Probably the best on the album, Sophie and Sia together, they nail this song.
    2. Simple Things - Title track, Mozez is soulful as it gets here.
    3. In the Waiting Line - My personal fav of the album, Sophie just hits so hard here.

If you are into those tracks you will probably dig the rest of the album.

This isn't just a downtempo, "chill-out" album. What makes this different is the cinematic quality of some of the tracks, and that live studio musicians were used throughout. This is not a remix album; it is a set of real honest-to-God COMPOSITIONS. Two tunes leap out at me, because I sat down and learned them by ear: "In The Waiting Line" is probably the best Noir tune of 2001. A great tune in Bb with three distinct, flowing chord progressions, loaded with portentious minor chords and incredible vocal harmonies. "Give It Away" is a song that any number of movies could use for a love story soundtrack. This is a lovely, wistful instrumental five-chord jam in F#. A great song to have on the CD when you're driving through the wine country on a sunny day. Many other tunes provide diverse highlights as well.
The only tune I'm not wild about is "Destiny," as it is uncomfortably close to the Mariah Carey/Christina Aguilera pop scene for my taste. Great production values, though. :) Not only that, but if that is a hit and finances more such work, more power to 'em.
Throughout the CD, good solid acoustic guitar work and imaginative strings. Hard to believe two obscure studio production assistants came up with such a solid first record. This shows great talent and I hope they do a lot more.

5.0 out of 5 stars getting to know Zero 7
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 4, 2011
I was introduced to Zero 7 in a bar in a hotel in Dorset in 2010. Since then I have bought just about everyone of their cd's. I started with Let it Fall (an ideal starting point for those who have not heard them before) which I listen to over and over again, as with Simple Things. Their very latest cd Another Late Night took a bit of getting into as the style and some of the artists have changed, yet I have been won over. The words of the songs are clear and several have some romantic themes, as well as some great music and percussion instrumentation. Lovely music to listen to in the car or during a quiet night in etc. I have bought these for family and friends, all have been wow'd.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Pressing of a Classic Album
Reviewed in Canada on September 10, 2015
The debut album from Zero 7 is an absolute classic, and infinitely listenable. As one of my favourite albums of all time I had long coveted a copy on vinyl, but could never afford the overpriced original pressings you would find online.

After many years of waiting through the album has finally seen a modern re-issue, on 180 gram vinyl, and I have to say it is utterly spectacular. This is hands down one of the best sounding records I've bought in quite some time. No pops, no clicks, no surface noise. The vinyl plays so cleanly you'd think it was on CD. I find a lot of modern re-issues tend to be flawed. There's been plenty of discs I've bought that are noisy the first time I drop the needle on the record. Not so here. It sounds glorious.

If you are a fan of the album this is a must purchase. Your sound system will thank you.
