How to be a Domestic Goddess is not about being a goddess, but about feeling like one. What this deliciously reassuring and mouthwatering cookbook shows is that it's not hard to bake a tray of muffins, or a sponge layer cake - but the rewards are high. Here is the book that feeds our fantasies, understands our anxieties and puts cakes, pies, pastries, preserves, puddings, bread and biscuits back into our own kitchens. With a writer's flair and a cook's passion, Nigella brings you everything from brownies to bagels, from gooseberry-cream crumble to double apple pie, from pizza to pistachio macaroons, from festive bake to Barbie cake.

Product description

Amazon Review

Those who love comfort food have cause to be grateful for Nigella Lawson's book How to Be a Domestic Goddess. Cause, too, perhaps, to wonder that she isn't the size of a house, since baked comfort foods typically encompass large quantities of butter, cream, eggs, sugar, chocolate, nuts, cream cheese and all the other foodstuffs to which with dreary inevitability attaches the deadly word "sinful". But in Nigella Lawson's hands these dangerous, even feared, substances are transmuted alchemically into the healing balms of the goddess, who presides (perhaps a little ironically) over a harmonious kitchen realm.

The recipes are suitably divine, covering cakes, biscuits, pies, puddings, breads, with special sections on cooking for (and by) children and Christmas. Most are sweet, though there is a choice selection of savoury pies and puddings--Pizza Rustica, Steak and Kidney Pudding, Cornish Pasties. The sweet things range from the airy elegance of Pistachio Macaroons, through the luscious spiciness of Norwegian Cinnamon Buns, to the trailer-trashiness of Coca-Cola Cake.

Nigella Lawson's poise never falters, whether she is discussing serving mulled wine with mince pies ("Don't fight it") or a strange passion-fruit liqueur required for one of her trifles ("the most divinely camp liqueur you could ever come across"). She plays a kind of game with her readers, insisting constantly on her greed, but really invoking our own. What a fascinating book: hints of obsessiveness revealed behind the beautifully projected personality of a laid-back voluptuary.--Robin Davidson

Review

"Working mothers must give thanks to Nigella... What sets her apart from every other food writer is her empathy with working women and her realism... Every page of How to be a Domestic Goddess is imbued with warmth" The Times "How to Eat was sheer joy... Now she's done it again. If ever baking needed pepping up, Nigella does it" Daily Express "Her prose is as nourishing as her recipes" -- Salman Rushdie Observer "Cerebral and scintillating advice for the hungry, peppered with wit" Sunday Times "Passionate, informative, detailed, bossy and admirably practical" Evening Standard

Fantastic cook book
Loved this earlier book from Nigella. This is the 2nd year of making a Nigella Christmas cake. It was a total success. I was also adventurous and made apple and pineapple chutney which I made for Christmas presents and were delish!!!

I love this book! It's my go-to for so many bakes, including my all time favourite, Marzipan Fruit Cake. I have a Billy Bookcase full of baking books but I'll always check this first. The recipes are easy to follow and accurate. There's so many surprise finds (baklava muffins anyone?) as well as reliable recipes for all the classics.

I've read other reviews that mention cooking times and temperatures being off. All ovens are different and it's important to learn how yours acts. When I move house and have to adjust to a new oven (which happens a LOT!) I use the Snickerdoodle recipe in here to learn the calibration - once they come out right I know I can bake anything with confidence

This is bought as a gift for a friend of mine who wants to get into baking. It is quite simply the best baking book I've ever owned. Everything comes out as it should do, it's very encouraging and quite an entertaining read anyway. I must have baked at least 75% of recipes in this book, they always come out as they should do, and taste delicious. By the time you've made a few you'll be totally hooked - it also doesn't tend to go for lots of unnecessary ingredients or faff, it's all about the taste of the food you're enjoying at the end of it. This is a great alternative to Bake Off - it's been around a lot longer, and although there are some showstoppers in there, it's more a book you can return to again and again when you just want to make something tasty without spending all day in the kitchen - the working woman's guide to Domestic Goddessness if you like!

This is a particularly nice edition (jealous!) which maintains a good level of photography so you can whet your appetite, and I'm looking forward to tasting the results, that I haven't made for a change!

I’ve had this book for over 20 years and bought it so many times now as a gift.
The recipes work. Nigella writes with flair- encouraging you to try different things within a recipe. Even to ignore some suggestions (using plain flour and faffing with baking powder- when SR works- a lot is about practice and experimenting when you’re out of an ingredient)
This was my starting point on the road to competence as a baker.
Taught me to pay attention to the oven temperature- such an important thing that.
Fab book written with humour. Excellent for a parent wanting ideas on keeping the kids busy and teaching them to bake. My kids and I learned together. Both are competent bakers too. Everyone loves something home baked as a gift.
    Don’t hesitate. Buy it.

I do lots of baking for my own family and also for the half-termly cake sale at my kids school. Over the years I have acquired a large collection of baking books. This is one of my favourites, both for the way its written (I am an unashamed Nigella fan and have lots of her books) and also for the recipes. I have tried about 3/4 of the cake recipes (I'm not into making chutneys etc) in this book and many of them I make again and again. I have never had any problems with the recipes I have tried. My personal favourites include the Dense Chocolate Loaf Cake, and the Damp Lemon and Almond Cake. I am a complete convert to her way of making scones (something I have done for years), and also the Millionaire Shortbread (toffee cooked in the microwave - so easy). Although I have many others on my shelf, this is one book I really wouldn't want to be without. I think the recipes are straightforward enough for the novice baker and the more experienced will find a wealth of good recipes to add to their repertoire.

I have been really impressed with this cookbook and would have to say Nigella does it again. I get on really well with her recipes which have always turned out to be reliable and delicious (if a little indulgent at times!).

Some notable successes are the banana bread which is scrummy (too good for the children!!), blueberry muffins, pancakes, jam doughnut muffins (seriously naughty), the most wonderful passionfruit curd, a delicious spiced apple chutney and the piece de resistance without a shadow of a doubt are the scones which are the best I have made or tasted.

Buy this book and you won't be disappointed but you may need to exercise a lot of willpower keeping it to treats only or buy some bigger clothes!!

Basically I wanted this book for one recipe ! I was therefore very pleased to get this copy from my regular book supplier on Amazon at an amazing price - the book is brand new - no marks - nothing and for a fraction of a new book so I am not just happy I am totally happy ! I tend to use two book suppliers on Amazon as both are reputable, their prices and quality of books supplied are far superior. So if I can't get what I want from one supplier then I have the other to go to - I don't look elsewhere as their service is fast, efficient and reliable. Thankx.

Thank you Amazon .. for a used copy its in surprisingly good condition .... thrilled with my purchase. I ordered the earlier edition but I did check out the number of pages in the newer edition .. around the same ... so I don't think I'm missing out on a lot .. considering that I got it at a very good price I'm extremely happy. Looking forward to trying out the Dense Chocolate Loaf Cake and the Processor Danish Pastry and as for the Chocolate Volcano it's intriguing.

The book is in English, of course!

5.0 out of 5 stars So many recipes, and I want to make them all!
Reviewed in the United States on 3 September 2024
I feel this way about any Nigella book or tv series. I have multiple of her books, this one being the latest, and I bought this one used. It's in great condition and arrived on the early side of the range of when it was to be expected. It is jam packed full of recipes using lovely ingredients that excite me and make me want to bake and cook. What is wonderful about Nigella's way of cooking is that it's not overly complicated, and her recipes almost always turn out to be very good. Not every single one, but many more are great than not. If you've ever watched her shows, she writes the way that she speaks, which is to say that she sounds 100x more intelligent than 90% of us but still makes everything very approachable and logical while at the same time being whimsical and decadent. This book is more than just recipes. There is a lot of commentary and explanation behind the recipes and personal experiences and stories that make one feel that they're reading more than a cookbook, which is what makes her so wonderful. I do think that there aren't enough images of the dishes in this particular book compared to some of her others, but maybe that's because this is one of her earlier books. Doesn't matter - I love it anyway...

    5.0 out of 5 stars Attention à l'édition!
Reviewed in France on 28 December 2010
