- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2024I love this show! I am so glad that the production company (or whoever) was finally able to secure the music rights and release the streaming version. It was so much fun watching this series again. There are really very few shows like this in the history of television. Even if you search for similar shows the suggestions aren't that close. Sure, there are other "fish out of water" series. But, there are very few that deal with so many concepts: arts, history, philosophy, religion, science, etc. So happy to have this available on Prime Video!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2007Northern Exposure - Thanksgiving
Joel: I don't believe it. It was so cold, so premeditated. You should have seen him. He was smiling. He was gleeful. This is a Perry Ellis shirt! I wore this shirt twice. I'm walking down the street. I greet him, I was cordial...and the next thing I know...he ambushes me for no reason.
Marilyn: It's Thanksgiving.
Joel: Yeah, well, I know that.
Marilyn: That's why.
Joel: Why what? Ed threw a tomato at me because it's Thanksgiving?
Marilyn: Uh-huh.
Joel: What could Thanksgiving possibly have to do with this unprovoked attack?
Marilyn: We don't celebrate like you.
Joel: We?
Marilyn: Indians.
Joel: What are you talking about?
Marilyn: We have a lot of anger.
Joel: Anger?
Marilyn: Uh-huh.
Joel: And so you throw tomatoes? You throw fruit at people?
Marilyn: At white people.
Joel: Wait a minute. I'm to believe that this was simply Ed's way of saying Season's Greetings?
Marilyn: Uh-huh.
Joel: This is crazy. This is insane. Why tomatoes? Why not grapefruit or papaya?
Marilyn: Tomatoes look like blood, but they don't hurt.
Joel: Let me tell you something, Marilyn. Not only do I find this custom atavistic and reprehensible, but Ed made a very serious mistake. He got the wrong guy. An innocent bystander. I'm not white.
Marilyn: Yes, you are.
Joel: I may look white, but I am not. I am Jewish, ok? Jewish. A fellow person of color. A victim of oppression. Let me ask you something. Do you know what a shtetl is?
Marilyn: Reservation?
Joel: Right. How'd you know that?
Marilyn: You told me.
Joel: Pogrom.
Marilyn: (shakes head side to side, no)
Joel: Okay, well, for your information, in Eastern Europe, in the pale of settlement, Jews were herded into these squalid villages.
Marilyn: Shtetls?
Joel: Yes, exactly. We were ostracized, segregated and the Cossacks would ride through regularly, raping, pillaging and murdering. So you see, Marilyn, I may be a lot of things, but I'm not white. Definitely not white.
(Joel exits, while Marilyn ponders a red, ripe tomato before her on her desk.)

- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2022The fourth season, for me, is when the show started to go a bit downhill. This is due in large part to the fact that Rob Morrow's contract dispute saw his character seeing less and less screen time and thus, removing a large part (Joel's fish-out-of-water and acclamation story) of what made the show great in the first couple of seasons. Season three did continue the Joel and Maggie love-hate relationship, and introduced a new potential love interest for Maggie in the form of Anthony Edwards, who played Mike Monroe, an environmental lawyer who is allergic to everything and lives in a hermetically sealed bubble in the middle of the woods. Edwards would end up leaving toward the end of the season after he landed the series lead on ER so his storyline kind of fizzles out. The season continues to be a story-of-the-week procedural, with each episode focusing on a different character's storyline. Pretty much every character gets a significant story arc for at least one episode, including Ruth Anne, who attempts to learn to drive, an episode in which Chris loses his voice, and an episode in which Maurice is modeled for a wax sculpture. Shelly also gets a considerable storyline this season when she becomes pregnant in a story arc that continues on into season five (if you read through some of the other reviews, it is not that confusing that she does not have the baby during this season).
If you get the DVD set, the extras, much as with the prior seasons, include deleted scenes and gag reels. The one plus is that there are no more double-sided discs, at least on the set I have. The issue of the music is a big sticking point for the US releases. Again, Universal replaced some, but not all, of the original music with canned instrumental tracks so they did not have to pay for the rights to some of the songs that were used in the show. Of course, the show aired in the early to mid-1990s and the DVDs were released in the 2000s, so the rights to use the music likely had to be renegotiated when the DVDs were released. This resulted in some songs being ditched if they were too expensive, which did detract a bit from the storylines as there are times when the specific song choice was made because it tied into the story in the show. That is not to say they are unwatchable with the replacement music (at least not for me), but they are different if you see the show as it originally aired.
Overall, the season is good, but as I said before, not as good as in the earlier seasons. You can definitely tell that Rob Morrow is in fewer scenes, especially as the season goes along, and the show is just not the same with Joel as a more ancillary character. That said, all of the actors really step up and brought great performances this season and their contributions should not be overlooked. The show continued to have very good, although sometimes quirky and silly, and raised topics like homosexuality, and climate change (yes, it was a known thing even back in the 90s), long before any other network television show was. And, it is still one of the only shows I can remember (along with another 90s series Due South) that extensively used Native American actors and incorporated Native American culture. So, even though it was not as good as the first couple of seasons, I do think it is worth watching.

3.0 out of 5 stars Alaska- Dorfgeschichten

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Archive series
The series, Northern Exposure, despite being nearly 20 years old now, is as fresh and entertaining as it ever was. I love the gentle and quirky humour, together with the human stories, often with a touch of magic and lots of eccentricity. This was a superb series, with excellent cast and story lines. Favourite characters have to be Ed the young, gentle Native American man who is mad about old films, and lives in a world of his own. Marilyn, the Native American doctor's receptionist who seemingly says almost nothing, then comes out with one-liners that crack you up, and "Chris in the morning" the local d.j. and philosopher. They are all wonderful characters who will live on I'm sure, as they are timeless. The chemistry between Joel the hypo-eccentric doctor and Maggie who pilots the small plane, is wonderful. They all are! A favourite series of all time. Genius!

5.0 out of 5 stars Northern Exposure
Brilliant - full of the quirkiness of life in Cicely Alaska!
I enjoyed watching this on TV x years ago and am enjoying it more the second time around.
It feels like meeting old friends! Ruth Ann in the store - Holling & Shelley at The Brick (wish it was my local!) Ed and his ideas for being a famous film maker/director, Joel the Doctor and 'the will he won't he' relationship with Maggie.
Plus all the other characters who crop up - Maurice the Astronaut who appears to own practically everything in town! Marilyn the quiet Indian who hardly says anything but who can say more with a look or a shrug!
Adam the weirdo chef - almost legendary like BigFoot!
Not to mention Chris-in-the-morning the DJ with his homespun philosophy drawing on many faiths, ideologies etc.
Plus the brilliant Alaskan scenery.
Northern Exposure real escapism!
