- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2024I actually checked out a bunch of child-friendly anatomy books from the library to see which fit our needs the best. I have an 8-year-old who is really interested in anatomy. This book was the "winner." :) Clear pictures. Well-written descriptions. With enough facts to satisfy young curiosities. My younger kids (6, 8, 10) really like this book - and I even catch my teens reading it through (the illustrations and clear descriptions really are great).
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2023My daughter was really interested in anatomy, and would ask about inside and outside, big (like organs or organ systems) or small (like pores, cells and such), and I ran out of things to tell her about, so I bought this book! We made it thru, little by little, every page. It had the perfect amount of information, images, and ratio of info to images!! She loved it and would go over some pages over and over, back and forth. I believe I got it when she was just 3 years old. If it is important to you, either way: it only has images of the fetus and has images of the uterus and the positioning in the female body, but nothing on the male physiology or external organs on the female. I bought a different anatomy book which is more detailed, as a good follow up to this one, which has the male and female anatomy more in detail.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2012My almost eight-year-old daughter has become increasingly curious about what goes on in the human body, the various functions of organs, etc. and so I did some research. I started off at my local public library where there are numerous reference books on the human body. Obviously, the ones for adults are too densely packed with information and technical jargon, and even some of the so-called junior reference books seemed to be either too wordy or lacking sufficient visuals.
Dorling Kindersley or DK has some of the best junior reference books on various topics and the DK First Human Encyclopedia does not disappoint. This is a 2005 edition (so perhaps an updated edition is due soon) and is very well-organized. There is a perfect balance of visuals and explanations, and many of the photographs feature young children which makes a book like this easy for young children to relate to.
The book is organized into the following categories:
Human Body
Skeleton and bones
Moving muscles
Brain and senses
Heart and blood
Lungs and breathing
Skin, nails, and hair
Fighting disease
Digestive system
Urinary system
Reproduction and growth
Life cycle
Staying healthy
Communication
Reference section - this contains among others, a Glossary and an Index (which I deem an absolute must in a reference work)
I would recommend this for children ages 4-9 because children in the upper elementary grades and up would probably benefit with a more detailed book featuring human organs that are more detailed and have much more information describing the various functions (correlating with the science syllabus in those grade levels). For younger children though, this makes an excellent primer on the human body, written in accessible language that will help young children understand their body better.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2013I bought this for my 5-year-old when he started asking me detailed questions about the digestive system and I couldn't answer them. As I said, he's only 5 so I wanted something that would give him both comprehensive but simply-stated information along with supportive photographs. This book turned out to be perfect for him.
The photographs are plenty, and they are full of notes and details. The various sections are written in "sound bite" style, which is nice. When I read one, it's not so much information that it's overwhelming or hard for him to understand. Plus, this makes it easy to come to a stopping point in our reading without having trouble picking up where we left off.
Some reviews commented about the reproduction section, saying that it didn't give enough information. While it doesn't go into details about sex or sexual activity, it does give a lot of info about the biological aspects of reproduction post-intercourse. The "Reproduction and Growth" section begins like this: "You need a mother and a father to make a baby. The mother's body does most of the work, but the father also has an important job -- his sperm joins with the mother's egg, and a new life begins ..." It follows a drawing of a uterus, photos of babies in the womb, and moves on to other aspects of the human life cycle from birth to growing older. If you're looking for something with more sex education in it, this isn't your book. But for me -- for the age my child is now -- this is plenty of information.
My son loves this book. I would definitely recommend it as a young child's introduction to human anatomy and will probably try other books in DK's "first reference" series.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2015When my 4 year old starting grabbing my text books (I'm a nursing student) and asking me questions about the pictures in them, I knew it was time to get her her own "body book." I looked into a bunch of different ones from a variety of publishers and settled on this book after reading the great reviews.
My daughter LOVES this book. The pictures are perfect and I like that it covers more than just the basic body systems and goes into more depth with topics like genetics, the life cycle, allergies etc. She is still a little bit young to completely understand all of the concepts but I think she will grow into it nicely.
I agree with previous reviews that the lack of discussion about the penis and vagina in the reproductive chapter is a little bit odd. I can definitely see how it would confuse an older child with a genuine interest in how babies are made from start to finish, but they make separate books strictly for "the talk" and I don't think this one was written with that intent. Overall I highly recommend this book to anyone with a "little scientist" in the house.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good for younger readers
This does a great job of not dumbing-down for bright young readers, without having the language be too hard. My son loves it, as it's "real science" and he doesn't feel talked-down-to, but he can read it himself. (He's just about a free reader).

5.0 out of 5 stars great book for inquisitive minds
This is a well written and illustrated book for children and adults. It has great images and highlights all sorts of interesting facts about the human body. I purchased this for my 6 year old granddaughter for Christmas and she loves it. I got it to go with the Squishy Human Body toy. My granddaughter keeps bringing up some of the interesting facts from the book like "Grandma do you know that I have way more bones in my body that you?" An excellent gift for a young person 4 and up.
