Review

A Perfect Circle prove that they've got not only good taste, but real bite, too. -- SPIN

Around the midway point, just as APC seem handcuffed to despair, they remember that a good protest song should stir the spirit rather than sink it. [Dec 2004, p.140] --
Blender

On the better half of this eccentric concept album, A Perfect Circle... revisit classic protest hits, jacking up the terror by throwing out iconic arrangements and performing heretical surgery on the melodies. --
Rolling Stone

Sweetly morbid dreams of a better world abound on this politically motivated release. --

When you review things like this, do you review the music itself or the packaging? Both? The album is just ok. Mostly covers. My favorite parts where the original songs, with the Beatles cover being a standout of the rest. The packing is somewhat unique in that the gatefold feels like it folds into a box. It came undamaged and the record plays fine. If youre a completionist you'll probably want to pick this up, otherwise I say skip it.

Great place to buy from. very good item they delivered!!

"oh my friend, how did you come to trade the fiddle for the drum?"

i'm listening to eMOTIVE by aPerfectCircle and after reading some of the terrible reviews it received, i am quite in disagreement with those reviews.

most people do not like the fact that a lot of these songs are covers done in new ways but i want to say to those people that this is a huge band. they have put out amazing music and are constantly coming out with new material - if they want to do covers on an album about anti-war they damn well can! they can sing about whatever they bloodly well want to as well as it's done well! and yes, it IS done well.

furthermore, people are surprised with the anti-war/anti-violence message here and claim that maynard james keenan has "sold out" and suddenly become a peace freak because all of his other albums (tool included) are pro violence. and i simply have to do a double take here. WHAT? while keenan and his musicians express many of the primitive emotions known to humans, they have never come out to sing that violence is the way to go. in fact, as long as i've been listening to them, their message about finding peace within and coming to terms with the dark side of the human psyche has been clear as a bell! in fact, i have often been absolutely impressed with this metal/rock band's ability to preach the succulent message of inner sanctity while maintaining a provocatively dark image.

tool/APC has always been about primal feelings, about those deep dark emotions we keep so well hidden. about the repressed, and finding release for it. not in easy ways, and not generally in happy ways, but neither in destructive ways necessarily. yes, it's a lot of anger and pain, but they do not condone violence. when they sing of violence it is to lament the horrors it inflicts upon people. ***keenan explores the darker side of human existence, and comes back pissed off that so many people get it wrong.*** so many people use their pain to hurt others. or they don't examine themselves and they use their stupidity to hurt others. that's essentially what tool's music is about, mankind's incessant drive to kill itself.

and YES, there is a CLEAR difference between the first PC album and this one.. but i think that the expectation of a band staying the same through every album and sticking to one genre of music is really unrealistic. there is too much to work with, too many interests to explore, too many messages to express. look at Tori Amos. every single album of hers is different than the one before it and while people get pissy about it and whine and moan and hope she goes "back" to playing the music she used to, she still has an immense following that actually understands her need to explore with different kinds of music instead of doing the same old tired thing over and over and over again. what the truly disappointing aspect if one wants to take a deeper look into this, is that growing and changing is only human but popular opinion more often than not wants more of the same, as if being stuck in the same spinning vortex of energy makes the million other vortexes not as interesting or important.

"mother, mother there's too many of you cryin', brother, brother far too many of you dyin'... "

This is a beautiful album by APC. The vinyl is clear yellow, and very heavy grade (180 gram) and it sounds great on the turntable. This is my favorite APC album, and really the only one I thought was great. I love Tool and Puscifer, but never really got APC until this album. It is mostly a war protest album that consists almsot entirely of cover songs. The versions of Imagine and What's Going On are some of my favorites, and Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rythm of the War Drums is an awesome cover of Pet from Thirteenth Step. If I was going to have theme music follow me around (ala I'm Going to Get You Sucka!) I would have that song be my theme music. This is one of my favorite albums that I have on Vinyl, and it sounds infinitely better than the CD.

I hate it when bands that get political between songs at a concert, but show no other interest in politics any other time. I also really hate it when bands only say catch phrases that indicate they are just regurgitating prepackaged ideologies, rather than trying to share their values. I think this album states that Maynard/APC have put a little more thought into their ideas. Moreover, their message isn't vote democrat. Their message is that war is terrible and that peace is better. Further, they suggest that if we don't want war, that us, a people of a democracy should speak up about it. I think that is a fair message.

I read one review that said that art and politics do not mix. Whatever fool says that needs to go home and burn just about every album they own. I think bands that tend to have silly lyrics, or messages that are generally very removed from societal problems probably shouldn't get political, but I think they are the exception, not the rule.

I read one person's review that said he didn't agree with their lyrics. The only thing I could see disagreeing with is that arm's reduction would be good thing. But, how do you disagree that peace is better than war? I think most would agree that under certain circumstances it may be necessary, but was/is the Iraq war necessary? To "liberate" a country whose people see us as an invader!?!

The reason I wrote about the message of the album is because those who like war, or think that the U.S. invasion of Iraq was a good idea, probably won't like the album.

Musically, the album is decent. One reviewer wrote that you need to listen to it a few times and you will be hooked. I believe that to be true. One of the best qualities of the album is that it is catchy. The problem with the album is that someone says the album sounds rushed. I agree. I think if they hadn't given themselves a deadline of Election Day it probably would be better.

Also, I think they give the song "Imagine" the signature creepy sound of APC. I see this as a problem. I don't think "Imagine" is supposed to sound to like that. Don't get me wrong, their version is catchy, but I don't think the lyrics fit that sound. Further, I think John Lennon would like the reason they are covering the song (i.e. APC's message), but I don't think he would like the sound of it.

The rest of the songs in my mind range from okay to excellent. However, I don't know what many of the originals sound like to compare. I like "Pet" a lot more than its remix. I feel it is also important that I point out that Billy does a lot of singing on the album, so those who expect to only hear Maynard singing will be disappointed.

In conclusion, if you like the message of peace, and you like slower music with a creepy sound that is catchy I recommend this album. If you are some sort of warmonger, or you don't like cover songs, or you think you will be turned off by someone other than Maynard singing for some of the tracks, don't buy this album.

This album was hard to find at a good price. Luckily there was a reissue. I normally get my vinyl off Discogs, but I'm not paying over $90+ for an album I can find for cheaper.
