“Taken all together, Ginsberg’s poems are X-rays of a considerable part of American society during the last four decades.” — The New Yorker
This magnificent volume gathers the published verse of Allen Ginsberg in its entirety, a half-century of brilliant work from one of America’s greatest poets.
A chief figure among the Beats, Ginsberg changed the course of American poetry, liberating it from closed academic forms with the creation of open, vocal, spontaneous, and energetic postmodern verse in the tradition of Whitman, Apollinaire, Hart Crane, Pound, and William Carlos Williams. Ginsberg’s raw tones and attitudes of spiritual liberation also helped catalyze a psychological revolution that has become a permanent part of our cultural heritage, profoundly influencing not only poetry and popular song and speech, but also our views of the world.

“At 1,200 pages, the current volume testifies to the poet’s scope and indefatigable energy; there’s a lot to like…The best of his verse in COLLECTED POEMS 1947-1997 accumulates with a relentless, visionary eye, his characteristic mix of activism and mysticism enduring in his aging body, still howling.” — Chicago Sun-Times

From the Back Cover
Here, for the first time, is a volume that gathers the published verse of Allen Ginsberg in its entirety, a half century of brilliant work from one of America's great poets. The chief figure among the Beats, Ginsberg changed the course of American poetry, liberating it from closed academic forms with the creation of open, vocal, spontaneous, and energetic postmodern verse in the tradition of Walt Whitman, Guillaume Apollinaire, Hart Crane, Ezra Pound, and William Carlos Williams. Ginsberg's classics Howl, Reality Sandwiches, Kaddish, Planet News, and The Fall of America led American (and international) poetry toward uncensored vernacular, explicit candor, the ecstatic, the rhapsodic, and the sincere—all leavened by an attractive and pervasive streak of common sense. Ginsberg's raw tones and attitudes of spiritual liberation also helped catalyze a psychological revolution that has become a permanent part of our cultural heritage, profoundly influencing not only poetry and popular song and speech, but also our view of the world.
The uninterrupted energy of Ginsberg's remarkable career is clearly revealed in this collection. Seen in order of composition, the poems reflect on one another; they are not only works but also a work. Included here are all the poems from the earlier volume Collected Poems 1947-1980, and from Ginsberg's subsequent and final three books of new poetry: White Shroud, Cosmopolitan Greetings, and Death & Fame. Enriching this book are illustrations by Ginsberg's artist friends; unusual and illuminating notes to the poems, inimitably prepared by the poet himself; extensive indexes; as well as prefaces and various other materials that accompanied the original publications.

In Society
I walked into the cocktail party
room and found three or four queers
talking together in queertalk.
I tried to be friendly but heard
myself talking to one in hiptalk.
"I'm glad to see you," he said, and
looked away. "Hmn," I mused. The room
was small and had a double-decker
bed in it, and cooking apparatus:
icebox, cabinet, toasters, stove;
the hosts seemed to live with room
enough only for cooking and sleeping.
My remark on this score was understood
but not appreciated. I was
offered refreshments, which I accepted.
I ate a sandwich of pure meat; an
enormous sandwich of human flesh,
I noticed, while I was chewing on it,
it also included a dirty asshole.
More company came, including a
fluffy female who looked like
a princess. She glared at me and
said immediately: "I don't like you,"
turned her head away, and refused
to be introduced. I said, "What!"
in outrage. "Why you shit-faced fool!"
This got everybody's attention.
"Why you narcissistic bitch! How
can you decide when you don't even
know me," I continued in a violent
and messianic voice, inspired at
last, dominating the whole room

About the author

Allen Ginsberg was born in 1926 in Newark, New Jersey, a son of Naomi Ginsberg and lyric poet Louis Ginsberg. In 1956 he published his signal poem, Howl, one of the most widely read and translated poems of the century. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, awarded the medal of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the French minister of culture in 1993, and co-founder of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa Institute, the first accredited Buddhist college in the Western world, Allen Ginsberg died on April 5, 1997.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2009If you just want the poems of Allen Ginsberg, this is all that you need. Absolutely everything (Except for readings, photography and such). If you're considering getting a complete works, you probably don't need a lot of convincing with regards to the merits of Ginberg's poetry. However, I will say that though I am not crazy about a few of the minor poems that he published in his later books, he always stepped it up when it came to the big stuff. And in case you've just read one of the million or so copies out there of Howl, Ginsberg didn't shock the world and make of his life time to smoke weed and watch cartoons. Kaddish blew my mind, and the subtleties of Plutonian Ode come to me all the time when I'm daydreaming. I must admit, I love the pocket poets additions, and have most of Ginsberg's stuff that was printed in those. Then I bought this. Truth is, by the time you've bought two of those you've paid for a little over the price of this. Those little books are nice though and they are what I use. Really doesn't matter all that much how a person reads the poetry I figure & so I will mostly emphasize that all of the books Ginsberg published with City Lights are worth having (the majority of this book). There are at least two poems of Ginsberg that are of the magnitude of Howl (& given the all-encompassing (and not-so-compressed) nature of The Fall of America I would make it 3) & they were written by a more mature poet.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2012This is a very substantial publication, which covers Allen Ginsberg's life work in poetry, from the late forties, to the poems he wrote on his deathbed. It includes his classics, Howl, Footnote to Howl, Kaddish, America, Hum Bom, and all his other poems, collected over a fifty year period. This book is available as an e-book, but I bought it used through Amazon.com for cheaper than the price of the e-book and it arrived in great condition. I find it more fun to read his poetry if you have recordings of Ginsberg himself reading the poems. He recites his own poetry in a special way, the way it is meant to be read and heard. This is a complete collection from one of the (if not THE) greatest of the poets of the Beat generation, which included Jack Kerouac, and WIlliam S. Burroughs, among others.
Five out of five stars for this complete, definitive publication of Ginsberg's poetic lifelong work.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2012Its an amazing book and huge too. Most of Allens work is here. I have the kindle edition as well because I loved my paperback one so much I wanted to carry it around and read Allens poems whenever I felt like it.
I fell in love with Allens poetry about a year ago and have been listening to his poems in audio like crazy, but this book is so delightful I have been reading it rather than listening to more audios, as my time is a bit short these days. I cant say how much I love it. I would marry this book if it asked me! I dont think any poetry loving person with a sense of fun would ever regret buying this book. Get it! And bring more wonder into your life.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2016Ginsberg hallows the new Holy, that Numinous Experience far from the bowed heads and folded hands of false piety. He straddled both the Beat and Hippie Generations with a raw feed that will bear hearing and heeding far beyond this Now when we are None for Crutches, Creeds, and when we seek answers that our paternalistic and chauvinist last century would shut out, that which has become the gay new mainstream. As one who would write poetics of the new raw feed, Ginsberg has emboldened me to be honest to the point of disdain for what before I was (straight and ....phobic) to this my honest moment (trans-fem and happily so!) Read this collection of Psalms as the Newing Testament of a New New wHOLLY Bible!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2023Super great book for anyone who wants to lose their entire mind completely forever. ( ╹▽╹ )
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2024Took a while for me to understand what Ginsberg was trying to say. After I got it, I am very much enjoying his observational, beat, poetry. If you are squeemish about graphic male homosexuality, you may not like this book. Ginsberg often goes into picturesque explanations of his exploits and desires. I particularly enjoyed his musings on trips through the midwest and his take on the social and political zeitgeist of the times. I'm a little over half way through and enjoying it more and more. Good read into the beats.
